In addition to being one of the most skilled writers ever to work on a roleplaying game, Hite's an astonishing autodidactic scholar of conspiracy, Forteanism, secret/alternate history, and modern myth - and is probably the finest nonacademic scholar of H.P. Lovecraft we've got, with that 'nonacademic' qualifier frankly optional. His (vanished, alas!) 'Suppressed Transmission' columns for Pyramid magazine blended all his interests in an unclassifiable stew of prose; along with Hofstadter's Gödel, Escher, Bach I'd count them as models of how to blend utterly personal, gleefully esoteric, seemingly irreconcilable private interests into a new literary form. I treasure the bastard.
