Yes, MIT students let hygiene lapse during finals week, just like all other college students. (It isn't finals week right now, of course, but don't let niggling details bog you down when there are geeky little immigrants to make fun of.) The baseline hygiene level isn't ideal either, so things get nasty in clusters and student lounges. And since the school is in Cambridge, classrooms are exposed to outside air for, like, three weeks out of every academic year.
But that doesn't excuse this dead-stupid news report. The 'reporter' obviously asked the students to provide the little bits of 'local colour.' The 'student senate' providing toothpaste is no different from MIT Medical dispensing disinfectant in every Athena cluster. And the bit about biology students (the last student comment) is actually funny - in a 'laughing with' way, not so much CNN's default 'laughing at' fashion.
Good on the UA for providing toiletries to students who do, after all, work pretty fucking hard each semester to provide the lackwits at CNN without something to talk about. After all, what else could they possibly be sending their reporters to cover right now? Surely there's nothing interesting or world-historical happening today.
Stupid craven fucking bastards.
