SB media studies/computer science 2001, SM (unpaid-for, uncollected) media studies 2003. I nearly failed out of school while enthusiastically pursuing basic/remedial studies in sex and sitting-around-talking; ended up well-regarded subliterary bloviator. Surprise! MIT extends meritocratic ideal throughout student life; deadlines are all fungible, power relationships fluid, and social stratification mostly benign. The intellectual atmosphere is unique on earth. Shabby, awkward, psychotically self-motivated MIT undergrads have a kind of sweet autistic innocence; their despair and twice-national-average-frequency suicides are consequently both heartbreaking and eerily unsurprising, like your second cat dying. I loved it there and was often totally unhappy: love amid ruins.
