A vitriolic, antimodern 'gun culture' divorced from its outdoorsman/sportsman roots. 2nd Amendment advocacy far beyond 'a firearm for hunting and/or self-protection.' The militia-lite rhetoric of the NRA. Support of a dandified carpetbagging GOP on the basis of some strange gun-owner loyalty. Rabid opposition to sensible anti-crime measures like restrictions on assault rifles, or the imposition of waiting periods.
Those things are problems. They are political/cultural considerations, separate from the charmingly abstract notion that 'the right to bear arms' is atomic and sacred and 'deeply American' in some transcendent ahistorical way.
And those things are what Obama is talking about.
